Dear Parents/Guardians, Today a student posted a note on a locker that was political in nature. It referenced school shootings. This was following a recent trend on the internet that begins with, "If I die in a school shooting". Once this was discovered by our staff, we called a shelter-in-place and notified the South Amboy Police Department.  Our school worked with the SAPD to assess the matter, identify those involved and then appropriate actions were taken. All protocols were followed and the SAPD determined the note was not a threat, but political in nature.  Once the shelter-in-place was lifted, a school-wide assembly was called and all students and staff were addressed by administration. The importance of safety was emphasized as well as the danger involved with making political statements that cause alarm.  Administration reviewed alternative avenues to make statements such as the recent assembly our students developed and conducted titled: "Remembering the 17". Our goal is to educate our students in a safe environment. We want to help them understand the appropriate methods to express their concerns. Please take a moment to speak with your child regarding the importance of this matter. I want to thank the South Amboy Police Department for their support during this incident. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school. Thank you, Dr. McCabe Principal Today a student posted a note on a locker that was political in nature. Dear Parents/Guardians, Our high school students had a presentation by our local OEM, Police, Fire and EMS. This presentation occurred in our parking lot this morning. We had a crashed car placed in the street with two students inside the car: one played the driver who had been drinking and another the passenger who was a victim of the crash. Our Police, EMS and Fire personal responded. They went through the activities they normally would during such an event had it been real. The driver was given a field sobriety test and taken into custody. The passenger was a fatality. The fire department then performed an extrication to take victims (they were dummies) out of the back seat to be transported to the hospital. After the events were over, members of the Police Department and the Fire Chief spoke with the students about what they had witnessed. How a poor decision on one person's part could have such negative results. The legal ramifications for drunk driving were presented as well as the effects such a tragedy can have on friends and families. Please take a moment to discuss the presentation with your child. I hope he/she found it educational. A thank you to our local office of OEM, Police, Fire and EMS responders for donating their time as well as Al's Auto Body for donating the car.  Thank you, Dr. McCabe Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians, Our high school students attended the assembly this morning, "Vaping - A Smoke screen". It was very well received. Retired DEA Agent, Douglas Collier, provided factual information to our students about e-cigs and vapes, and the risk factors associated with vaping.  The focus was on becoming informed so our students can make wise decisions. Please speak to your child about the presentation. I am sure he/she will have something to share with you about what was learned today. These conversations are very important. Thank you, Dr. McCabe

Dear Parents/Guardians, On Tuesday, 5/15/18, our high school students will be seeing a presentation given by Douglas Collier, a retired DEA agent. Mr. Collier works with many schools throughout the state and provides programs on drug/alcohol/tobacco awareness and prevention for students and parents. The program our high school students will be seeing on Tuesday is titled: "Vaping -The Smoke Screen". The program will cover the topics of Vapes and e-cigs, and the risk factors associated with vaping. Vaping is linked to high use rates of other drugs among adolescents. The presentation will include an interactive PowerPoint as well as a Q and A with the students. Evidenced based prevention will be the primary focus along with incorporating local data and resources.  Thank you, Dr. McCabe

Dear Parents/Guardians, The Junior/Senior Prom is less than two weeks away. As our students get ready, I wanted to make certain everyone was familiar with the events that evening.  Portraits: Information was handed out regarding prom portraits. If you are interested in having portraits taken, please return  the form, with appropriate fee, to Mrs. Sherman as soon as possible. Those wanting photos will have them taken prior to the  prom while at the MHS. The first scheduled slot of time will be at 6:00 pm. Each subsequent time will be five minutes earlier,  5:55 pm, 5:50 pm, etc. The first three student portraits scheduled will have the 6:00 pm time slot as three portraits can be completed in each five minute time slot.  We are scheduling this way so that those who submit paperwork and fees first will have less down time between the portrait being taken and the time to board the bus. No times will be scheduled until the payment is received. Once payment is received, a time slot will be provided to the student by Mrs. Sherman. So, if your child submits a photo packet and fee, he/she will then be provided a time slot. Students having portraits taken should report at the time they were provided to the auditorium entrance. We ask students to arrive at 6:00 pm and gather by the auditorium entrance to the school.  The first bus will begin boarding by 6:15 pm.  We will be returning from the venue to the auditorium entrance of the school at approximately 11:30 pm. On the day of the prom, some students may want to leave early. Please know this time is not excused. Students must be present until 12:13 pm on 5/24/18 in order to be able to attend the prom.  Those leaving early who are 18 years of age will sign themselves out in the main office.  Those 17 and under will report to the media center and wait for a parent/guardian to arrive there for sign out.  If someone other than a parent/guardian will be signing out your child, the main office must have written notice from you of such by homeroom on 5/24/18. In order to ensure student safety, a uniformed police officer will be providing security at the venue. We anticipate another successful prom.  If you have any questions, please contact the school. Thank you, Dr. McCabe  MHS Principal
