Early Childhood Education

We understand that the transition to preschool is an important milestone for your family. As placement notifications have been distributed, we would like to take this opportunity to provide transparency regarding the criteria and processes used to determine student placements across our district locations.

  • Placement Protocols: Student placements for South Amboy Elementary School, as well as partner institutions including Acelero Learning and the Children’s Center for Learning of South Amboy, are determined via a comprehensive review of multiple measures. Given that the demand for enrollment at South Amboy Elementary School exceeds the physical capacity of the school building, this system has been established to ensure equitable access for all families residing within the district. Seats are allocated strictly in accordance with these criteria, rather than via a chronological order of application. The administration evaluates variables such as federally mandated educational supports and works to maintain balanced classrooms regarding age, gender, and additional demographic factors, thereby adhering to affirmative action requirements and optimizing classroom environments for academic success.
  • Academic and Social Supports: Comprehensive programming, specifically Tools of the Mind and Second Step for Early Learners, remain fully implemented across all instructional environments. New this year, the district has further integrated the Kickstart Literacy initiative to maximize linguistic accessibility and speech development within the student population. Furthermore, district-level instructional coaches and specialists work alongside each site to provide targeted professional scaffolding for educators and to facilitate the fundamental developmental transitions of students during their initial entry into the formal educational environment.
  • Sibling Priority & Exceptions: Sibling preference is taken into consideration during the placement process for incoming students with an older sibling currently enrolled and attending the same facility, though fulfillment cannot be guaranteed. Due to strict adherence to student privacy regulations, modifications to the standard placement protocols are strictly restricted to instances where a student necessitates specific mandated educational services or accommodations exclusively available at a designated location.
  • Home Address & Proximity: Although the district acknowledges the convenience associated with residing near a specific facility, residential address and geographic proximity are not weighted criteria within the general preschool placement process. This administrative protocol is established to guarantee equitable access to the district's primary facility for all residents. Furthermore, staggered operational hours are implemented across locations to facilitate the coordinated transportation of multiple students to district buildings.
  • Waitlist and Reassignment Protocols: Reassignments are administered and authorized exclusively by the South Amboy Elementary School administration and the school principal. In the event that a family declines an allocated seat at any designated location, the vacancy will be offered to waitlisted families in accordance with their established order of request. Please be advised that an opening may not be available at the commencement of the academic year, or at any point thereafter.

We appreciate your desire for transparency and hope this explanation clarifies our placement process. We remain committed to providing an excellent educational foundation for all our students, regardless of the physical building they attend.
