The HS boys baseball team had their rematch against a 10-2 Timothy Christian team last Thursday. Winner of that game would be the gold division champion. Well, the guvs got their payback, taking it to Timothy Christian and securing the gold division championship  11-3.

Matt Stempinski earned the win on the mound throwing 6 tremendous innings. The offense came alive in the 6th inning as the score was tight up to that point, 4-2, we scored 6 in the 6th and added one more in the top of the 7th to secure the victory, the offense was led by Ben Hernandez, Anthony Vella, Jeremy Vazquez, and Angel Barillas.

Friday the 13th we received some humble pie from a tough Spotswood team, 10-0 in 5.

The invitational county tournament began for us on Tuesday 5/17 as the 5 seed, and we had to take on Dunellen in the opening round.  We broke the game open after Dunellen scored 3 runs in the first,  putting up a 9 spot and keeping the game out of reach for Dunellen.  We take on the 4 seed Sayreville HS Friday in the quarterfinals.

Softball

The South Amboy Varsity softball team is on fire this week enhancing their record to 14-5 currently on an 8 game winning streak!  On Tuesday in the first round of the NJSIAA Tournament for Central Jersey Group 1 the Lady Guvs defeated Woodbridge Academy by a score of 13-5.   The ladies previously lost to this team earlier in the season and it was great to see them fight for the win, Evalise Perez pitched 5 innings to record the win!  Kyleigh Millette and Kayla Buchanan won the game for the team in the bottom of the 5th inning.  On Wednesday, the ladies traveled to Piscataway to play the number 3 seed (as the 11 seed) in the GMC tournament and left victorious! The score was 16-15.  This nail biter was a game to watch, the team came together after scoring 14 runs in the first inning.  Evalise Perez threw all seven innings on the mound and recorded two hits including a triple.  Jada Berry, Sarah McLaughlin and Jayleen Quintana also had big hits in the game.  The winning hit came from Morgan Moskal who stepped up for the ladies in a huge way while the seniors are away for their Senior Disney trip!  The ladies take on South Hunterdon today for the second round of states at home at 10:00am.

James Jamolawicz started the night off with one of his fastest times ever while the three freshman, Thomas Cannon, Gavin Rubin and Jimmy Mercado all turned in big PR performances. Guin Kennedy ran her second fastest time ever and missed a PR by just one second. Jack Smith also had a good race and turned in his fastest time of the season. The top performance of the night was turned in by Captain Joe Jamolawicz who became the 7th runner in school history to break the five minute mile barrier with a very fast time of 4:55.

Tennis

The boys tennis team this week competed in the GMC tennis tournament. Jake Wells and Davey Cheng and Joel Diaz All played singles. On Thursday we played Dunellen we’re on our second doubles team of Nick Szatkowski And Jonathan Moakler winning 10 games in their two sets. A tremendous improvement over the last 3/4 weeks for these two young men.We have one more match on Friday which will conclude our season this year.--

Once again the boys were faced with some adversary, but like always, they overcame the issues in their way and came out on top. The hustle and heart of this group has been wonderful to watch as the season has gone on, I could not be more proud as their coach.

Baseball

CONGRATULATIONS to the varsity baseball team for winning the Gold Division!

This week the varsity Guvs were forced to play a double header due to last week's rain, against the third place in the division Dunellen team who have played all teams really tough. Steven Evanski came up huge, throwing a 7 inning 2 hit shutout in the first game of the double dip.  Birthday boy Nigel Johnson put the game out of reach for the destroyers with a bases clearing double to the right center gap. Gabe Albarran collected three big hits as well!

In the night game of the double header Christian  Smith pitched a solid complete game for us, as we won 10-4.  Senior Anthony Vella led the guvs going 4 for 5.  Birthday boy Nigel Johnson also had a great game in the night cap.

The Guvs look to get revenge against Timothy Christian on Thursday to secure the division championship!

The baseball team honored their seniors,  Anthony Vella and scorekeeper Payton Garno.

Softball

Congratulations to the softball team for defeating 6th seeded Highland Park in the first round of the GMC Invitational softball tournament,

The Varsity Softball team is having an outstanding week winning three consecutive games improving their record to 10-5 and working their way up the division ranking to the third spot.  On Monday, the Lady Guvs scored 8 runs in the last two innings to earn a come from behind victory defeating Mother Seton 13-11.  Brianna Sweatt earned the save on the mound recording 6 strikeouts in 3 innings.  The team had 16 hits a season high for the ladies.  Brianna Sweatt had four hits, Jada Berry three hits, and Sarah McLaughlin and Evalise Perez each with two hits.

On Tuesday, the team beat South River by a score of 13-5.  Brianna Sweatt pitched the complete game adding ten more strikeouts to her count.  Maggie Whiteley, Jayleen Quintana and Sarah McLaughlin all contributed with two hits each.

On Wednesday in a perfect way to honor the seniors on Senior Night, the Lady Guvs defeated East Brunswick Tech by a score of 16-5.  East Brunswick previously defeated the team earlier in the season and are currently just ahead of South Amboy in the rankings as a number two seed.  Evalise Perez was outstanding on the mound with 7 strikeouts in just 5 innings and only allowing two earned runs.  Iyanni Twiggs had three hits on the day with three stolen bases while Emma Kalantsis had two doubles and three RBIs.  The team is excited to take this momentum into the first round of the GMC tournament on Thursday going against the 5th seeded Highland Park!

Tennis

The boys had three matches in a row. The team overall has improved from the beginning of the season with Jake Wells at number one and David Cheng at number two winning more games in these three matches then in the previous five. This has been a challenging season for more than one reason as the young men have handled it brilliantly. They kept their heads up throughout the entire season and I’m proud of them for doing that. We honored our two seniors Joel Diaz and Abdelrahman Abousherifa  on Wednesday before the match vs. St. Thomas Aquinas.

Middle School Softball  The middle school softball team defeated Timothy Christian on Monday with a score of 21-1. 5/6/22

Softball

The Varsity Softball team only played one game this week due to the inclement weather.  On Wednesday, the Lady Guvs defeated South River, the 3rd ranked team in the division by a score of 5-2.  Evalise Perez was unstoppable on the mound and up to bat.  She had a solo homerun and recorded 9 strikeouts.  Emma Kalantsis threw two girls out attempting to steal and had an RBI single to help secure the win for the team.  Jada Berry, Brianna Sweatt and Laura Ivan also each had a hit!

Tennis lost 3 to 2 to Perth Amboy. At third singles Joel Diaz defeated his opponent  6-0,6-0. Nick Szatkowski and Justin Venosa won at second doubles 6-4,6-4. The team has shown consistent improvement over the last several weeks.--

MS Baseball

The middle school baseball team won 17-1 on Friday! Led by a dazzling pitching performance from Jack Clements, he was able to shut the opposing team down. Offense was productive again, as Trevor Seig and Diego Colon were both 4 for 4. The boys were excited to play against Sayreville and some of their travel ball teammates.

The middle school baseball team won a tight game on Wednesday by a score of 2-1. Micah Nemeth pitched a gem on the mound and was helped out by some stellar defense from Frankie Rodriguez and Jadiel Vasquez. Trevor Seig drove in what would become the game winning run with a late RBI single. The boys were super excited to have played so well against one of our toughest opponents.

The boys have embraced the “practice how you play” mentality and it is really showing in their performances in games. As their coach, I have seen many players continue to improve and elevate their skills as this season has gone on. I could not be prouder of the whole squad.

MS Softball

The softball team lost a well played game to Milltown on Wednesday.

MS Track

Last week several members of the middle school track team raced at Sayreville High School against runners from Sayreville and Old Bridge. In the 55 meter hurdles, Natalie Lasia ran a PR time of 12.1 seconds which was less than a second off of the school record. Natalie also turns in a huge PR in the 400 meters. James Jamolawicz ran a big PR of over one minute while Jack Smith turned in one of the fastest times of his career. Guin Kennedy also ran a big PR of 12:38 which is the second fastest girls time in school history. Captain Joe Jamolawicz ran well in his first 3200 of the season. The team will be on the track again on Saturday at Georgian Court University.

Baseball

The boys baseball team struggled in their Season opener losing A tough one 4-3 to Timothy Christian, but have won 3 in a row beating Piscataway tech, 7-5, and sweeping a talented Perth Amboy Tech team with their huge offensive outbursts 22-6 and 17-6.  The pitching has kept us in games with valiant efforts from Brandon Gasiewski, Matt Sempinski, and Steven Evanski picking up wins. The offense has been pretty balanced with our underclassmen really shining, Ben Hernandez, Jeremy Vazquez,  Ben Smith, Nigel Johnson have led the way, but huge games from Gabe Albarran have really set the tone with our offense.  We play our makeup with Piscataway tech before two with wardlaw and our autism awareness challenge game against Rahway.

Softball

The South Amboy Varsity Softball team is currently 3-2 beating Calvary Christian, Mother Seton and Wardlaw-Hartridge.  Evalise Perez has been dominating on the pitching mound recording all three of the lady G uvs wins!  Freshmans Brianna Sweatt and Emma Kalantsis have been vital to the offensive strategy with 12 of the team's 27 hits and just under half of the team's RBIs. The speed of Iyanni Twiggs and Jada Berry has made a huge difference in close games.  The team suffered close losses to Timothy Christian and East Brunswick Tech.  The girls have three games over spring break including playing in the much anticipated Autism Awareness tournament, and hope to add three more wins to their record!

Tennis

Highlights include Jake Wells winning his last two matches versus Woodbridge High School and Middlesex. Abdul Abousherifa also had some success by defeating the Woodbridge High School singles player. Another player who is improving match by match is Joel Diaz.

Sieanna followed up her record setting performance by winning her heat of the 400 meters in a fast time of 1:15. In the 1600 meters, junior Steven Evanski dominated his heat from start to finish in a new PR performance of 5:15. In the first 55 meter dash of his career, Rafael Albarran won his heat and placed 11th out of 129 runners to become the second fastest indoor sprinter in school history with a time of 7.25. Other PRs were turned in by Thomas Cannon and Kenny Handy in the 55 meters and the 800 meters, Joe Jamolawicz in the 55 meters, Jimmy Mercado in the 55 meters and 1600 meters and Dan Evanski and Jack Smith in the 1600 meters.

Boys Basketball

The varsity boys basketball team had our senior night game against EB Votech on Wednesday 1/19. We celebrated our 2 seniors Adam Eldeeb and Anthony Vella who have been committed members of the program for 4 years. We were able to secure a hard fought 51-42 victory! It was an overall great team effort. Jianny Caraballo led the team in scoring with a career high 17 points. Gavin Pelkey added a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony Vella continues to dominate the boards as he pulled in another 13 rebounds while adding 8 points. Angel Barillas and Josiah Floyd added great defense and energy for the team.

“The Boys JV basketball team fought hard in their game against EB Vo-Tech on Wednesday but came up short in the end 39-30. Great hustle all around from everyone as they continue to work and get better day in and day out. Looking forward to our next game, this Friday, where we take on Piscataway Vo-Tech in hopes of getting the win”

South Amboy Middle School boys basketball is off to a 2-3 start. We’re doing a good job defensively, communicating and working as a unit to produce a quality of work that will make us proud. The willingness to learn about ourselves, each other and our sport day in & day out, is seen through our gameplay. Led by a group, not any individuals. We work together as a team, lift each other up on & off the court. We face off against Spotswood Middle School to bring us to .500 & continue our climb towards our season goals.

Girls Basketball

The girls had the closest game of the season falling to Piscataway Tech by just 3 points. Taylor Gliese had a career high 30 points. The Lady Guvs scored 51 points, the first time the program has hit the 50 point mark since 2017.

The Lady Guvs Middle School team are off to a 3 and 0 record with victories over Dunellen, South Brunswick, and Highland Park. The Lady Guvs are led by Bella Pardo, Olivia Riveria, and Taylor Sofilkanich.

Cheerleading

This week we had our first full team attendance. The varsity cheerleaders helped celebrate boys senior night by decorating the locker room and making signs for them. The cheerleaders demonstrated their school spirit and sportsmanship while cheering both the boys and girls varsity teams on. Ali and Laura showed their leadership skills by leading the team in sideline cheers during the game and engaging the crowd.

Our middle school cheer team is doing an amazing job at learning and practicing their halftime routine. The athletes are looking forward to performing and showcasing their talent in the upcoming weeks. They have all been working really hard to support our teams. We also want to give a huge shout out to this year's captains: Alyssa Berecsky, Dani Kudelka, and Sophia Pham. These three athletes have cheered with us since their 6th grade year and have been great role models for our newer athletes.

Dear Athletes, Parents and Guardians,

NJSIAA Executive Order No. 238 Update:

Effective Friday, May 7, 2021, all sports activities conducted outdoors are subject to a gathering limit of 500 persons, inclusive of parents/guardians.  This limit DOES NOT include athletes, coaches, referees, trainers and other individuals who are necessary for the practice or competition.

For sports activities conducted outdoors in large venues with a fixed seating capacity of 1,000 or greater, the gathering limit has been increased from 500 persons to 50% of the total fixed seating capacity – the same conditions apply as previously described.

Mr. Zalocki, VP/AD

Dear Athletes, Parents and Guardians,
Capacity Limits / Spectators – Pursuant to Executive Order No. 230 (2021) and No. 234 (2021), sports activities are currently subject to the following restrictions:

 Indoors (Executive Order No. 230):

  • Indoor practices and competitions are limited to 25 persons.
  • If the number of individuals who are necessary for the practice or competition, such as players, coaches, referees and two parents/guardians per participating athlete, is greater than 25 persons, then the practice or competition may proceed.
  • If the above exception applies, the number of individuals still may not exceed 35% of capacity of the room in which it takes place, or 150 persons, whichever is less.
  • Currently, this Executive Order prohibits spectators beyond two parents/guardians at indoor sports activities.

 Outdoors (Executive Order No. 234):

  • All athletic practices and competitions conducted outdoors are subject to the outdoor gathering limit of 200 persons.
  • Athletes, coaches, referees, trainers and other individuals who are necessary for the practice or competition are not included in the 200 persons gathering limit.
  • Under the Order, parents/guardians are not “necessary for the event” for outdoor events, and therefore should be calculated in the 200 person limit.

Mr. Zalocki, VP/AD

Dear Parents/Guardians and Athletes,

The fall registration deadline for middle school boys and girls soccer will be closed after today, Sept. 25th. I am thankful for those that have registered, however; we are still in need of more athletes for both teams.

Know that if we do not have enough players to field a boys and girls team, we will not be able to have a season, thus having to cancel and default to a club program. We have great ability and talent to have a successful program. Let's make this happen!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Athletes,

This a reminder for those interested in fall sports to register as soon as possible. Please see the "Athletic Registration" tab for application details. Here is the link for the tab: http://mhs.sapublicschools.com/athletics/athletic_registration

We are in need of athletes for all fall sports. Students registering for a sport late can impact the number of athletes needed to have a sports program/team this fall. If we do not have enough interest, we cannot support the athletic activity.

Best,

Mr. Frank Zalocki, VP/AD

Dear Parents/Guardians and Athletes,

Our school physician, Dr. McKenna, will be conducting sport physicals for the 20-21 school year. Physicals will take place at South Amboy MHS in Nurse Houman's Office during the following dates and times:

Wednesday August 12, 2020 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm
Wednesday August 26, 2020 from 2:30 - 4:30 pm.

There will be a few changes this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic. We will be following appropriate CDC recommendations, which include social distancing, face coverings, temperature checks and health screening. The exam room must be disinfected after each student's physical. Our compliance with all CDC recommendations will require additional time. Therefore, we must limit the number of students to a maximum of 6 per hour (or 12 per day) and require all students to pre-register by emailing Nurse Housman at chousman@sapublicschools.com for the athletic physicals. We cannot accept any "walk-ins."

Due to the limited number of students who can be seen by Dr. McKenna we strongly recommend that students who have a regular family doctor/pediatrician see their current provider. In this way, priority can be given to students who do not have medical insurance or who are experiencing financial hardship.

In the event that fall athletics are cancelled, we will keep these dates for winter and spring sports.

If you have any further questions please email Mr. Zalocki at fzalocki@sapublicschools.com or Nurse Housman at chousman@sapublicschools.com

Best,

Mr. Zalocki, VP/AD
